This week in Language Arts students will continue to work on developing skills in paraphrasing, drawing conclusions and making inferences through poetry. We will do this through the Pearsonrealize website using the Interactive Worksheets. (Conventions, Literary Analysis, Reading Skill, Vocabulary Builder, Reading Warm-up A)
Homework Tuesday - Complete Conventions and Literary Analysis Wednesday - Complete Reading Skill Thursday - Complete Vocabulary Builder and Reading Warm-up A Students should also be working to complete the poetry portfolio. While school is closed on Thursday, Feb 18, students should complete Literary Analysis on pg. 359, questions 1-7 on Pearsonrealize.com. Students should also begin working on their Poetry Portfolio. Follow the directions listed and refer to the rubric for clarity. I have attached a copy of the Poetry Portfolio Project Sheet. Be sure to use at least 8 of the 16 vocabulary words in your original poems. Poetic Vocabulary Words are as follows: lyric poem, concrete poem, haiku, simile, metaphor, symbol, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, free verse, limerick, acrostic (see project sheet for more information regarding this part).
We are continuing our unit on Craft and Structure through poetry. This week we will be practicing the skill of paraphrasing to determine the meaning of the poems. We will also focus on Sound Devices such as alliteration, onomatopoeia and repetition, and the impact it has on the meaning of the poems. Additionally, we will begin building our personal poetry portfolio's this week. This will be a compilation of original poetry.
All students must have access to the internet to complete homework and class assignments. If internet access is unavailable, students have the opportunity to complete assignments during their recess time. The test will also include ALL 16 vocabulary words from the past 3 poetry collections. BE SURE TO STUDY YOUR NOTES! The test will be on Friday, Feb. 20. Thursday: Complete pg. 331-336 on Pearson; answer all column questions; complete Language Study and Word Study Friday: Write a Haiku and Concrete Poem This week we will start a new unit on Craft and Structure with an emphasis on poetry. The unit will last for the next 5 weeks. We will practice the close reading strategy and study skills such as:
1) Drawing Conclusions 2) Making Inferences 3) Figurative Language 4) Close Reading 5) Sound Devices 6) Using Context As we study these skills and strtegies, students will have the opportunity to practice their creative writing by producing a portfolio of original poems. We will be using our online textbook, Common Core Literature Book, 2015, which can be accessed at home using the following website: www.pearsonrealize.com |
