Words include:Union, Strike, Knights of Labor, Collective bargaining, Haymarket Riot, Homestead Strike, Pullman Strike, Pullman Porters
Students will explore documents about the Pullman Strike here in Chicago. When the Pullman Company slashed factory workers' wages in the summer of 1894, thousands of railroad workers went on strike and refused to run trains including Pullman cars. The strike divided the nation. In this lesson, students read parallel accounts from two, opposing Chicago newspapers. Students read each newspaper closely to identify the key phrases that demonstrate each paper’s position on the strike.
7th- Students will also analyze documents about Nat Turner and write a Document Based essay on the Turner led slave uprising. Nat Turner led the largest slave uprising the South would see until the Civil War. The infamy of the event has led to multiple interpretations of Turner as a historical figure.
