Hello parents and students! Welcome to week 7 of ELA. This week we will continue our novel study using Dear Martin (8th grade) by Nic Stone and Ghost Boys (7th grade) by Jewell Parker Rhodes. This week we will focus on identifying author's craft and structure and the impact it has on the meaning of the text. Students will come to understand the different types of styles and devices authors use to create meaning. With the times that we are currently living in it is important for our young learners to have tough conversations around social justice issues and racial inequalities. With this in mind, I have chosen these two novels that will not only continue a love for learning but will also spark the necessary dialogue among our readers and bring awareness to the importance of becoming dedicated advocates of change.
Here are our standards for the week:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.5
Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.
