Greetings!
This week 7th grade will work on examining the differences between a non-fiction text and a multi-media version of the same topic, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the subject. We will do this by identifying the problems and possible solutions that plastic pollution presents while reading and annotating Tiny Plastic, Big Problem using Common Lit. Students will also respond to assessment and discussion questions by the end of the week. 8th grade will continue their work with Greek Mythology by identifying moments of foreshadowing and how those moments help reveal the theme while reading and annotating The Golden Touch using Common Lit. Students will also respond to assessment and discussion questions. To practice the skill of comparing and contrasting, students will read the non-fiction text, You Can Buy Happiness, if it is an Experience and analyze how the authors of each text work to develop the theme.
Standards for the week:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.7
Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.9.A
Analyze how a modern work of fiction draws on themes, patterns of events, or character types from myths, traditional stories, or religious works such as the Bible, including describing how the material is rendered.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.1
Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.5
Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.
