Greetings!
This week we will begin our new class novels, The Outsiders (8th grade) and The Giver (7th grade) and are excited to end our year with these wonderful books. I have uploaded PDF versions of each book to google classroom for those students who do not have the actual book.
We are going to become familiar with vocabulary words as well as our characters this week. we will look closely at their traits as well as understanding more about the plot and setting.
Standards for the week:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.
Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings;
Reminders:
Please submit ALL late assignments to the late work link found in google classroom. This is to ensure all assignments are graded and added to the grade book.
Students should be reading everyday for at least 30 minutes and completing the reading activity weekly.

Ray School Walk-a-Thon
We’re excited that the Walk-a-Thon is back ON this year! During the week of June 7th, each classroom pod will be walking for Ray School!
We would love to see more families participating and every grade level competing! See below — only 5 grade levels on the board so far.
Both remote and in person students can participate! Individuals and grade levels can win fun prizes!

Maroon Tutor Match
We are excited to announce that the 2020-2021 Maroon Tutor Match (MTM) parent application is now open! If you have families who are interested in having a UChicago student provide 1:1 virtual tutoring to their child(ren), please feel free to sign up at this link to be matched. Tutoring rates are $14/hr. and we have limited scholarships available to local families in need of financial support.
It is Spanish and Gym time!! Gym is on Thursday and Spanish is on Friday. Links can be found on Google Classroom.

Weekly Assignments: Independent reading for 30 min a day, Read Theory, Asynchronous and Synchronous assignments.
Google Classroom: Student use this platform for daily assignments
Grades: Starting September 8, 2020 CPS will return to regular grading practices, as the district will ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed. There will be no pass or incomplete grades given.
Office Hours: School days from 2:10 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. We will use this time to connect with students and families. We will have scheduled appointments as well as open times. We will use Google Hangouts for one-on-one meetings and Google Meet for group sessions.
Communication platforms with students: Aspen and Google Suites (Google Classroom, CPS email, Google Meet, Google Chat).
Communication platforms with parents/families: Aspen, email, blog and phone. We recommend that parents/families know the emails and passwords of their students so they can also access Google Classroom.
