To celebrate Week 4 of Black History Month, Ray PTO invites Ray families to submit a favorite recipe that celebrates African American heritage to LaWanda May ([email protected]) by Wednesday, February 24. If you like, you could include a line or two about the person you got the recipe from, if it is a family recipe. LaWanda will compile the recipes and share them with the community at the end of the month.

Happy Black History Month! Ray's School Vision - Fostering the LOVE of learning! Hello February! This week we will continue to study the work of Miss Amanda Gorman. We will examine her poetry by observing the message, meaning, tone, and impact of her two poems, "The Hill We Climb" and " The Miracle Morning." The students will also write a response to one of the poems through their own poetry writing as well as draw connections between moments in history and their own lives. We will start our recognition of Black History Month by viewing Black History in Two Minutes and writing reflections (google forms). Students will do this twice per week throughout the month. Upcoming novels for February: 7th grade will be reading Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Patillio Beals and 8th grade will be reading A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Feel free to purchase these books in order to be ready for our upcoming unit on The Civil Rights Movement. We will have copies available at the school for pick-up as well. More info on this to come this week. I am hoping all students can have these novels by the first week of February. Standards for the week: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.1.A Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. Reminders: Please submit ALL late assignments to the late work link found in google classroom. This is to ensure all assignments are graded and added to the grade book. This will feel like a relatively short week because classes will be ending early but we still have lots to do, especially with the end of the quarter approaching. We will continue to use our short stories from last week to expand our thinking about why people sometimes find it difficult to understand others by using small group discussions, vocabulary trackers, and writing responses (8th grade only).

My goodness look at how time flies when you are having fun! This week we will use time to review Remote Learning Norms by playing a friendly game of competition using the alphabet. We will also have time to reflect on how to improve productivity during our small group meetings and last but certainly not least, we will be creating vision boards this week. I cannot wait to see and hear the goals of our students for this year 2021! We will bring these goals to life by using images, meaningful words, and powerful quotes. I am so excited to see what they create. :-)

It's week 5!! Can you believe we are more than halfway through second quarter? Last week, students wrote their personal narrative essays, which they are finishing up during their independent work time today and tomorrow (due 12/8/2020). This week, we will be diving into some Reading & Information standards, specifically around arguments and presentations of information. Students will compare arguments on a few different topics to determine who is making the strongest argument, considering their evidence and how the information is presented. Later in the week, students will take a look at how similar information is presented in typed format and by audio, considering the differences between the two forms of communication. Finally, students will begin a project to grow their personal narrative essays into a personal narrative podcast. This project will take us through next week, and will be an exciting way to showcase students' talents and introduce students to a new form of communication. Standards for the week: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.7 Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.8 Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.9 Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing different evidence or advancing different interpretations of facts Reminders: Late work (last day to submit for progress reports will be 12/14/2020- NO EXCEPTIONS) Please submit ALL late assignments to the late work link found in google classroom. Students will take their topic and focus on creating a plot mountain that will help them establish a clear order of events. Throughout the rest of the week we will build our narratives by adding an attractive lead, voice, transitions, sensory details, POV and a reasonable ending with a lesson learned.
Due Date for Personal Narratives - Tuesday December 8, 2020 Standards for this week: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.3.B Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, and description, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. During this short week students will continue to focus on the structure of personal narratives by listening to memoirs presented orally and in a performance style. This will help the students learn the steps to drafting a memoir and at the end of the unit they will create a podcast(oral version) or design a story board of their narratives. By Tuesday students will have chosen a topic and brainstormed different ideas for their personal narratives. Here are the standards for the week: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.2 Analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how the ideas clarify a topic, text, or issue under study. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.5 With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning.
